Why Are Fevers More Dangerous for Older Adults?
Can you believe it is already time to start talking about the fall season and all of the illnesses that usually circulate at this time of year? It seems like the summer months just flew by.
While the fall and winter seasons in the Louisville area are great for many reasons, the increase in seasonal illnesses is not one of them. Symptoms vary based on the different illnesses, but one of the most common symptoms across multiple illnesses is a fever.
Our AFC Urgent Care Louisville team explains what a fever is below and what symptoms to watch for that indicate a need for a doctor’s visit.
What Exactly is a Fever?
Getting sick looks and feels different for everyone, because our immune systems are all slightly different. While some illnesses could make your neighbor really sick, you might fare just fine, and vice versa. In any case, your body will launch an immune response to help you overcome whatever is making you sick.
Viruses and bacteria struggle to replicate and grow in a warmer environment, which is exactly why your body starts to heat up! This more hostile environment gives your body the time it needs to launch its attack more effectively. This is why many providers will often suggest you to leave your fever alone if you are feeling otherwise OK. Your fever may end up helping you feel better faster.
Illnesses That Can Cause Fevers
- Influenza
- COVID-19
- Shingles
- Respiratory infections
- Urinary tract infections
What Should I Do About a Fever?
If you are feeling OK, feel free to let the fever do its thing. Just keep monitoring it to make sure it isn’t climbing too high. That said, if the fever is causing secondary symptoms that have you feeling really sick, you certainly can treat it with some OTC medication and some much-needed rest.
Most fevers fade away within a day or two, but older adults and people with compromised immune systems need to be more careful. Our immune systems can start to weaken as we get older, and it can be harder to overcome illnesses on our own. If your fever is lasting more than three days, reaches 103 degrees or higher or is accompanied by any of the serious symptoms below, come see us right away.
