Who Is at Risk for Developing the Common Cold?
Common colds are one of the most common reasons for illness during the fall and winter seasons. There are millions of cases in the United States every year, and over 200 strains are circulating at any time.
Since it is normal for an adult to get two to three colds a year, there is a high chance that your next cold isn’t too far away! Our team at AFC Urgent Care Louisville gives us all the details about the pesky common cold below.
What Is a Cold?
A cold is a viral infection within your nose or throat. There are many different types of viruses that can cause an infection, so that is why there are so many strains! Most colds produce mild symptoms and will resolve on their own in seven to 10 days.
You are contagious to others when you have a cold. Avoid contact with friends and family and avoid touching your mouth and face as much as possible. Rest and drink plenty of fluids to help support your recovery.

When Should I Seek Medical Care for a Cold?
Generally, common colds don’t progress to the point of needing medical attention. However, if your symptoms fail to improve after 10 days or you have a persistent fever over 101.3 degrees, it is best to get checked out to rule out a different diagnosis.
Additionally, if you have an infant under 12 weeks of age that is running a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, it is always recommended to take him or her to be evaluated by a medical provider.
