When Should I Be Worried About Eye Twitching?

What Exactly Is Eye Twitching?
Eye twitching is a condition in which your eyelid muscles spasm involuntary. Also known as myokymia, eye twitching usually happens in the upper eyelid, but it can be strong enough to where the twitching occurs in both the upper and lower eyelids.
Eye Twitching Causes
- Stress
- Fatigue
- Eye strain
- Caffeine
- Alcohol
- Dry eyes
- Nutrition deficiencies
- Allergies
How Can I Get My Eye to Stop Twitching?
One of the first things you want to do when an eye twitch begins is to relax. Stressing about the eye twitch can actually make it worse. Therefore, you want to sit, rest and just be. If possible, try relaxation techniques, such as yoga, mindfulness meditation, guided imagery and/or breath focus.
In addition, you want to cut down on caffeine, as caffeine is a stimulant that can increase your risk of eye twitching or make an eye twitch worse. Practicing stress management techniques can also help you to lower your risk of eye twitching.
Ways to Better Manage Stress
- Limit caffeine intake.
- Get around 30 minutes of exercise a day.
- Obtain quality sleep at night.
- Keep a journal.
- Improve your time management skills.
