What Should I Know About the Flu?

Flu season is here, and flu rates have been much higher this year than they were last year. Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent yourself from getting sick!

Our AFC Urgent Care Louisville team explains why below.

Is The Flu Vaccine Effective?

Yes, it is! While it’s not 100% effective at preventing the virus, getting the vaccine is still the best way to prevent yourself from getting the virus. In fact, according to the CDC, flu vaccines reduce the risk of flu illness by between 40 and 60%.

If you happen to get sick with the flu even though you’ve had the vaccine, the vaccine works to protect you from serious complications. We’ve listed the most common flu symptoms below.

Common Flu Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Aches and pains throughout the body
  • Headaches
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • An extreme feeling of fatigue
  • A persistent and worsening cough
  • Stuffy or runny nose

Can I Treat the Flu at Home?

Yes and no. Since the flu is a virus, it will need to run its course before you start to fully feel better.

However, if you experience a fever in your bout with the flu, there are things you can do to lower it and to feel better! Flu fevers are generally manageable, but don’t hesitate to reach out to our AFC center if you feel you need further treatment or medical evaluation.

Ways to Lower a Fever

  • Stay in bed and get plenty of rest.
  • Keep hydrated! Drinking lots of water, tea and diluted fruit juices can help to replenish lost fluids.
  • Take OTC medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Stick to the proper dosage on the bottle, and don’t them use alongside other fever-reducing medications.
  • Stay cool. Remove extra layers of clothing and blankets, unless you have the chills.

Like we said earlier, getting the flu vaccine is your best bet at staying healthy this winter! We provide flu vaccines at our AFC center, and you don’t need an appointment to get one.
