What Does the Flu Feel Like?

Cold and flu season are here to stay for a while, and we all need to do our part to prepare for it. People are starting to get sick all around our community, and flu cases are already starting to rise all around the Colorado area.

Knowing what to do and what symptoms to watch for in regard to the flu is crucial!

Our AFC Urgent Care Louisville team explains more below about this year’s influenza strains and what to do if you are worried about your symptoms.

When Is the Flu Season?

The flu virus is circulating around us all of the time, but it typically is more prevalent between November and April, with the peak of the season being December into January. That’s because we are spending much more time inside in close quarters with others. The flu virus is really contagious and can spread from person to person through one uncovered cough or sneeze, or through an infected surface if you touch an object like a doorknob and then touch your face.

The flu historically has a quick symptom onset, meaning that you may be feeling fine one minute and then reaching for a blanket or tissues or stifling a coughing fit a minute later. If you start feeling any of the below symptoms, come see us for a rapid flu test.

Symptoms Associated With Influenza

  • Fever
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches

Can the Flu Be Treated?

The flu is a viral infection, and viral infections just have to run their course. Unlike bacterial infections, antibiotics do not work against them. There are some antiviral drugs that can be prescribed to help manage symptoms, but they need to be taken early on in order to be most effective.

Your main goal during this time is to watch how you feel and seek medical attention if you start to experience a really high fever (over 103 degrees), have trouble breathing or aren’t feeling better after about a week. Certain infections can become serious or even deadly over time, so do not hesitate to be seen if you are concerned about how you feel.

Treating the Flu at Home

  • Stick to water or electrolyte-replacement drinks.
  • Eat meals that are easy to digest.
  • Take it easy and get quality sleep.
  • Stay home while you are symptomatic.
