What Causes Arthritis?

Did you know? There are more than 100 different types of arthritis.

During Arthritis Awareness Month, our team at AFC Urgent Care Louisville wants you to learn more about the condition that affects more than 54 million people living in the United States. Read on as we offer some insight.

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis literally means “inflammation in the joints.” When you have arthritis, you can have it in one joint or you can have it in multiple joints. Although there are many different types of arthritis, the two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

While normal wear and tear of your joints tends to be the main cause behind osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that happens when the immune system starts to attack your joints.

Symptoms of Arthritis

  • Joint pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Decrease in range of motion
  • Anemic
  • Joint deformity

Is There a Cure for Arthritis?

While there is no current cure for arthritis, there are lifestyle changes that you can follow to help make life easier when living with arthritis. For starters, maintaining a healthy weight is important in managing your arthritis symptoms, as carrying excess weight can cause added pressure and pain on your joints.

In addition, the foods you eat can also play a role in alleviating arthritis symptoms—or in causing them. When living with arthritis, you want to try to avoid fried foods, processed foods and dairy products as much as possible. Instead, fill your plate with foods known to reduce inflammation.
