Is the Stomach Flu Dangerous?
Every illness can bring about unpleasant symptoms, but stomach bugs often take the cake when it comes to feeling icky. They can cause all kinds of GI symptoms that have you staying close to the bathroom for a day or two.
The stomach flu is actually the common (and misleading) term for the illness, which is called viral gastroenteritis. It is a highly contagious viral infection that can spread easily through populations and families.
Read on as our AFC Urgent Care Louisville team explains more about the stomach flu and what to do if you contract it.
How Fast Does the Stomach Flu Cause Symptoms?
The stomach flu is an intestinal infection and is actually not related to influenza at all. You contract it by either consuming contaminated food or water or by coming into contact with an infected person. You can expect to feel sick about one or two days after encountering the virus, but some people can start to experience symptoms as early as 12 hours after the exposure.
The stomach flu can spread rapidly through dense populations like schools, childcare facilities, nursing homes and assisted living. This is why you should always stay home and avoid contact with others when you are ill! It can also be helpful to disinfect your high-touch areas to help keep everyone else healthy.
Common Symptoms of Viral Gastroenteritis
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach cramps and pain
- Muscle aches or headache
- Low-grade fever
How Long Will I Be Sick From the Stomach Flu?
Even if you are experiencing all of those symptoms and are feeling miserable, hold on to hope! Most people make a full recovery after three days. Just take care of yourself by resting a lot, drinking water when you are able and eating bland foods like bananas, rice and applesauce.
If you are over the age of 65, keep a close eye on your symptoms and do your best to keep sipping on water. Dehydration is a real threat to older adults with the stomach flu, and it can be easy to do if you aren’t drinking enough water. If you ever are concerned about your symptoms or how you feel, remember that we are here seven days a week to care for you.
